BS Optometry

The BS Optometry program has been designed in conjunction with industry experts to provide students with the essential clinical skills and professional training to detect visual problems, indicators of injury or abnormalities, and optical diseases through examinations and make a difference in the lives of patients suffering from sight loss or visual impairment.

Learning Outcomes 

At the end of the 4 year program the student should be able to:

  • Help increase the coverage of eye care in the country and play an important role in the prevention and treatment of blindness.

  • Perform sight testing at community level and primary as well as secondary and tertiary centers

  • Prescribe refractive corrections including spectacles, contact lenses and low vision aids

  • Perform binocular single vision tests and help in the management of strabismus and ocular motility disorders

  • Screen for blinding disorders such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration and refer to ophthalmologist for treatment

  • To be able to operate various diagnostic equipment used in diagnosis and monitoring of eye disease.

Job Market

  •  Providing eye care services in hospitals, private clinics, and specialized eye care centers.

  • Conducting research to advance knowledge in vision science and develop new optometric techniques and technologies.

  • Working in public health sectors to promote eye health awareness and conduct vision screening programs in communities.

  • Engaging in the design, production, and quality control of optical products such as lenses, spectacles, and contact lenses.

  • Teaching and mentoring future optometrists in academic institutions and continuing education programs.

Entry Criteria 

50% marks in HSSC (Pre-Medical or Equivalent).
